Touching Spirit Bear:Chapters 16 and 17

I think the lessons that Edwin and Garvey are trying to teach Cole will help throughout his whole life. Garvey, for instance, is telling Cole all about how life is like a hot dog, or like anything really. If you make yourself a hot dog for the simple reason of it feeding you, then that is all that it will do. If you make yourself a hot dog, put more things on it, and you share it with other people then it would be more like a party. Life is what you want to make out of it. Edwin's lesson is quite different then Garvey's lesson, but it still holds a meaning. Edwin takes Cole into an ice cold pond in the morning. Once they are in the pond, he hands Cole a stick. The right end of the stick represents happiness and life, while the left end of the stick represents his anger. Edwin tells Cole to break the anger half of the stick off. Cole does this but he soon realizes that just because he broke off the anger side doesn't mean that the anger disappeared. It is still there and will always be. Anger is a memory never forgotten. I think that these lessons will help Cole in life. I think that he wants to become a better person.
